WHAT IS QUEER THEORY?

Queer theory is the sociological field of critical theory which emerged in the early 1990s as an outgrowth of the fields of queer studies and women's studies. Queer theory builds upon both feminist challenges to the idea that gender is part of the essential self and upon gay/lesbian studies' close examination of the socially constructed nature of sexual acts.

Queer theory perceives identity as a constellation of multiple and unstable positions instead of the assumed cis-heteronormative perception that gender, sex and sexuality is stable and binary.

IS IT OK TO USE THE TERM “QUEER”?

Yes and no.

If it is used in a respectful way rather than as an insult, that would probably be ok to some people. In addition to using it in common language, academically, it has been used to describe an entire research category of films, history, books, culture, studies, and theories.

However, even with the prolific use of this term in popular culture, some people still don’t like hearing it used at all due to personal and more recent histories where it was used in hate, criminalization, and clinical settings as a pejorative word.

DOES QUEERY HAVE MORE THAN ONE BRANCH?

Queery has its one and only branch in White Plains, NY, but we do travel to events, meetings and conferences in various places along the east coast. We are also available to do presentations and speaking engagements via Zoom or other meeting platforms.
