Sticks and Stones: An LGBT Youth Writing Experience
On August 24th, we were invited to showcase "Sticks and Stones: Reclaiming Names that Were Used to Hurt Us" to Center Lane, Westchester County's LGBTQ youth program. We prepared ourselves with a poster of all 21 prints as a gift to each participant and developed a writing workshop to support their upcoming open mic event in the fall.
We presented what became a very powerful and humbling writing workshop which had more to do with the response these young people had to the artwork as well as being called various anti-LGBTQ slurs. When they wrote their poems, stories, and personal narratives, they only had 15 minutes. And after that short time, they read their works aloud. As a whole, we listened, we cried, we laughed, and snapped our fingers as if we had our own open mic.
Personal stories and the release of these painful experiences in a safe environment is the heart of this project. Thank you Lisa Scott and David Diamond for inviting us to work with you and the young people at Center Lane.
