Queer Theory in Action

Queery is a combination of the words "Queer Theory." The aim of Queery is to deepen our own understanding of Queer Theories and offer our interpretations in creative and fun ways. The ultimate vision of Queery is to encourage everyone to live freely by questioning the various systems that keep us from fully being who we are.

Our first project, "Sticks and Stones: Reclaiming Names that Were Used to Hurt Us" was inspired by an article in the Advocate. The article listed various terms that queer people were called when they were younger, and how some of those terms have been claimed by the LGBTQ communities to reclaim their own power. In this project, we examined some of the terms we and our friends have been called in the past, and put our own whimsical twist to them while reclaiming those words as merely a part of our identity. Tongue in cheek, we play with the serious subject of verbal homophobic abuse by making art and creating discussions.

Below is a sneak peek into one of the terms that was used to hurt us. Can you guess what that was? What were some names you were called? Do they still have the same sting or power over you?

Come and see our "Sticks and Stones: Reclaiming Names that Were Used to Hurt Us" in fall, 2018 in the Tri-State area. Email us for more information.
